The geographical variety of Switzerland has created possibilities to develop rich vegetation. From the semitropical warm regions in Ticino up to the Mountain ranges of the Alps the vegetation of Europe seems to be there.
An especially unique variety of colors and tones is offered by the rich Alpine flora.
Here the plants prosper under very difficult climatic conditions: between day and night the temperature variation can reach more than 40˚!
Typical plants of the area are alpine rose, troll flower, soldanella, primrose, edelweiss etc. From 3000 plants, the 160 are legally protected by the authorities.
There are about 40'000 animal species, which include more than 30'000 species of insects. Numerous animals are also protected, as for example the Hedgehog, the north Lynx, the Capricorn (Alpine Ibex), the Alpine Chough etc.
After its disappearance a hundred years ago, the bear is coming back crossing the Italian mountains up to the Grisons. The biggest area of the country for animal and plants protection is to be found in this region with its amazing national park (159 km²). |
