The beauty of the Swiss scenery even fascinates the most demanding tourists.
Such a big variety of scenery can be considered exceptional for such a small area: lakes, mountains and hill scenery, single farms or dreamy villages are part of the charm of the country.
In the Alps lie the best known Swiss mountains. Among the 48 peaks in the Monte Rose Mountain mass above 4000meters high, there is the Dufourspitze (4'634m) which is the highest peak in Switzerland. The Jura mountain range is made up from lower peaks, among which the highest is the 1'679 meters high Mont Tender.
Between those two mountain ranges and from the Geneva Lake up to the Lake of Constance lies the centre of Switzerland, where the big towns and the majority of Switzerland’s population is concentrated.
The Jura (10%), the Centre land (30%) and the Alps (60%) are the three main geographical regions of Switzerland.
About 46% of the ground surface is covered with meadows and pastures, 25% with forests and only 6% of the territory is exploited for agricultural purposes.
In this small area (the north south distance is 220 km, the east west distance 350 km) the variety is exceptional: On a 3-hour journey you can see incredibly different sceneries, from the sunny palm avenues up to the imposing glaciers. |
