Climate

Both weather and climate can be very different in Switzerland depending on the region. The Alps play a big role in this variety of climate. The part situated in the north of the Alps is dominated by a central European climate; while in the South the climate is more similar to the Mediterranean climate.

The winds you can often meet are the mild Fohn and the cold Bise (mostly to the north of the Alps).

The average amount of precipitation in the North is around 2000 mms / year, while in the valley of the Rhone (canton of Valais) the average is only 550 mms / year.

In the central part of the country it is often foggy. This can last for some time.

While there is a lot of snow in winter in the Alps and Prealpes, no snowy cover lies in the regions of Geneva and Basel, but also in the South region of Tessin.

The duration of the seasons also varies a lot. The winter is generally cold and the snowy season lasts till the end of March. Nevertheless it can happen that in April the winter makes a small come back, and summer usually begins in May, with temperature around 25 – 30 degrees.
